I have found Elizabeth Day’s book, “How to Fail,” to be quite insightful. I was recommended by one of my friends to read it and as our reading preferences are similar, I decided to give it a go. This book was released in 2019 and explores the depths of shifting narratives and perspectives as well as a person’s ability to turn their failures into their accomplishments. The author has structured the book around her well-known podcast with the same name. The podcast welcomes different guests where they talk about their personal experiences with failure and how they dealt with it. The book has different chapters and each chapter is dedicated to different facets of failures which is tied by the author’s own self-reflections, experiences with failure, and vulnerability. The author has tried to mitigate the stigma surrounding the failure. It is done by including different anecdotes, interviews, as well as introspective thoughts in an attempt to strike failure as a powerful tool for resilience.
Definition of Success:
The beginning of the book captivated me as it analyzed and then carefully critiqued the narrow definition of success proposed by society and the burden of unrealistic expectations that this definition holds. The author then goes on to give arguments in favor of acknowledging and learning from failures so that one can understand themselves on a deeper level. Day has also been able to shatter the myth of perfection as she shared her own as well as her guests’ journeys. Her insights regarding the creation of space for authenticity and acceptance especially resonated with my own beliefs a lot.
Personal Worth:
Another important message was that the setbacks are not an indication of personal worth but are an opportunity for self-assessment and growth. A mindset shift in this regard is necessary where failure is just a mere step in a larger picture of achieving success. Vulnerability is another important aspect that cannot be negated as it reflects one’s willingness to share one’s failures for connection and empathy. This point made me reflect a lot and I was enchanted by the idea of a supportive community where people can share their vulnerabilities so that they can grow together. For me, this book has served as a guide that can show the path as one faces the inevitable challenges thrown at you in this life and I believe that it has done the same for many other readers of it alike. Thus, I will also be recommending it to my fellows so that Elizabeth Day can encourage them to carry on in their journey of personal development by offering an empathetic and empowering narrative through this book.
