Is it time to level-set the mindset?
Carol Dweck said “Perhaps it is time to level-set the mindset” when she talked about the growth mindset.
Have you ever heard of a growth mindset? If not let’s talk about it. I will start by sharing one of my experiences. In the last few months, I have started going to the gym. In an hour session, 45 minutes are reserved for weightlifting or cardio, whatever that day’s workout schedule is. However, the last 15 minutes are reserved for yoga.
Yoga is an ancient practice that you must have heard about too. It harmonizes our body, mind, and soul. You can check out the following video if you want to practice yoga also: https://youtu.be/g_tea8ZNk5A?si=74lpwx1pAcJ1fk8q
You would be surprised to hear that I am good at weight lifting and cardio but when talking about yoga, I seem to struggle a little. Yoga requires one to be physically and mentally involved and while I am good at simpler poses, more complex ones make me falter. My trainer has pointed me out several times, but I don’t seem to get better at it.After a while, I thought that maybe I am not good at this.
As I listened to Carol Dweck’s mindset growth philosophy, I realized I had a fixed mindset in which one thinks that one’s qualities are fixed traits that can be documented but can’t be developed. Carol vocalizes for a growth mindset instead of a fixed one. A growth mindset is where it is believed that basic qualities can be developed through hard work and dedication.
Learning about this concept and a little bit of self-reflection made me question; Is it time to level-set my mindset? Effort being the means to end while learning to improve is the end product made me motivated to improve at something that I had already given up. Since then, I have changed my mindset and have started putting more effort into my poses. I have started to practice the poses I am not good at in my free time. It’s been 3 weeks and I have seen some progress. I have ended up getting a compliment from my trainer regarding my efforts. I am still lacking a lot yet I am hopeful.I will keep on updating you about this journey of mine.
The moral of this titbit from my life is that mindset makes a lot of difference. A growth mindset is far better to progress in life than a fixed one.
